Homework Routine 2023-24

This is information to help you understand your student’s homework routine and expectations, so that you can support your student with reminders at home.

The “binder”:

Students carry and use the same binder everyday for core classes. We’re teaching time management, organization and accountability through this binder. It’s also a tool that can be used for communication with you, the families!

The front pocket: Here you’ll find student work and anything else that needs to go home and stay home. Please help your student by asking about the “front pocket” daily.

Weekly Planner: This is a tool to help students record their homework or any other school events one week at a time. This is a great way for you to see what they should be doing for homework.

Monthly calendar: This is a tool to help students see and plan out one month at a time. Both calendars are used to support students with time management. We encourage students to include any personal events on their calendars as well like band lessons or play practice.

Homework section: Here you will find any homework they have for the day or week.

Weekly homework routine:

Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes each night. We’ll be introducing a reading log soon.

Spelling:

Monday: students take a pretest for that week's words. Students are expected to practice the words they spelled incorrectly on the pretest.

Tuesday through Thursday: students are expected to complete at least 2 spelling activities throughout the week. They have a list of 6 activities to choose from.

Friday: Students turn in the two spelling activities they completed and take the test.

Vocabulary:

Monday: Students receive their vocabulary of the day worksheet. There are 4 words for the week. Ideally students would complete one word per day on the worksheet.

Friday: Students turn in their vocab worksheet and complete a vocab review in class.

Math: Each Friday students receive a double sided Math Mates worksheet. This includes a variety of topics such as multiplication and division, addition and subtraction, fractions and decimals. For now students are expected to complete a total of 8 problems from the front side throughout the week. The back side is optional. Math Mates is due the following Friday.

Audubon Center

We had a wonderful trip to Audubon this week. Students had the opportunity to learn how to build fires, create shelters, and learn about how resources impact animal populations. We're looking forward to our future visits.
